Let’s be honest — July doesn’t exactly scream “fresh start.”
There are no vision boards. No fireworks of intention (except the literal ones).
But here’s what most people miss:
We’ve just entered the third quarter. AND officially the second half of the year.
And while it is easy to be distracted by heatwaves, half-days, and vacation plans… leaders who know how to pay attention can use this time for something rare:
Clarity. Vision. Strategic pause.
When there’s no external pressure, we get to ask ourselves different questions:
– What do I want to work on—not because I have to, but because I want to?
– What deserves my attention before the fall rush?
– If I were building something for October or January, what seeds could I plant now—quietly, steadily—while no one’s watching?
Why desire beats duty:
Here’s what the brain science says…
Autonomy fuels motivation.
We’re more energized when we feel like we’re choosing how to spend our time. The brain literally lights up with dopamine in anticipation when a task feels intrinsically motivated. That’s why it’s easier to move big ideas forward when the pressure is off.
Less urgency, more creativity.
When we’re not running on adrenaline, the part of the brain responsible for deeper thought and strategic insight (your prefrontal cortex) can finally breathe. That’s when the best ideas tend to surface—when no one’s demanding them. It’s why so many great ideas come in the shower or on a run.
We underestimate Q3.
Behavioral scientists call this the Fresh Start Effect—we’re more likely to shift behaviors or start something new when a milestone passes. The start of the third quarter is subtle but potent. It gives us just enough structure to reflect, without the noise or expectation of January or September.
So what does this mean for you, right now?
It means you don’t need to wait for fall.
Or a deadline.
Or the start of something “official.”
If you have a dream that’s been simmering…
If a shift is calling you, quietly but consistently…
If you feel an urge to plan, reset, or imagine something new—
Now is a beautiful time to begin.
Not because you have to.
But because you want to.
Amazingly enough, I took last weekend to shop for back-to-school supplies with Grace.
Historically, that is not like me. Planning and executing this far in advance hasn’t been my natural rhythm.
But part of the work we do with leaders—and the work I’m always doing on myself—is learning to lean into the best parts of our wiring and gently shift the patterns that get in the way of who we’re becoming.
For me, that’s meant practicing the “zoom out” tool. Being a few steps ahead instead of constantly catching up. Choosing presence over pressure.
And here’s what I’ve noticed:
The more I allow myself to lead from that place, the more peace I feel.
Less frantic. More grounded.
This mindset shift is changing the way July feels. I’m not beating myself up—I’m getting curious. Tweaking systems. Rewriting rhythms.
So I can live into the best version of the rest of summer—and step into fall already aligned.
So, what do you want to start right now? What will your future self be so happy you did?
Go ahead and do something now. Build that identity you’re looking for. Especially when no one’s expecting it.
