As the year winds down, I’ve found myself asking this question again and again in coaching conversations: what does it mean to finish strong?
And just as important—what’s the real cost when we don’t?
We all carry unfinished things—projects, conversations, decisions, the small piles that have turned into quiet mental weight.
Sometimes it’s a text we haven’t replied to, a suitcase we haven’t unpacked, or a decision we keep delaying.
And beneath it all? Anxiety.
When things remain undone, they start to shape how we see ourselves. The stories we tell ourselves take root. “I don’t have it together.” “I’m behind.” “I can’t keep up.”
Those stories chip away at our confidence, and before we know it, we’re walking around with a dozen open mental tabs—buzzing in the background and draining our energy.
It’s not usually the task itself that wears us out. It’s the emotional weight of carrying it unfinished.
And if you’re anything like me, it often follows a familiar loop.
First, I default into a season and find myself in the middle of a swirl—it feels like things are happening to me, rather than flowing from intentional choice.
Then it starts to take it’s toll, I drop a ball, forget something, or someone close to me gently points out, “You seem overwhelmed.”
And then I’m faced with a decision: do I judge myself…. or do I get curious?
Which path we choose determines whether we stay in the loop or break it.
The truth is, not deciding on something is still a decision. Every open loop has a cost—a conversation you’re avoiding, a space you keep walking past, a project that quietly sits on your to-do list.
And yes, sometimes the decision is to let it go.
To say, “I don’t care that my bathroom looks like that right now.” or “I don’t want to make time for that commitment right now.” To acknowledge, “This isn’t a priority anymore.” That’s still finishing. And it allows you to get closer to the things you are deciding DO matter.
As October comes to an end and the holidays are right around the corner, this is your invitation to zoom out. To close those loops and decide what matters. To follow through.
So ask yourself:
How do you want the rest of the year to go?
What’s actually worth finishing—and what can you release?
Finishing strong isn’t about doing it all.
It’s about choosing with intention what stays and what goes.
It’s about deciding how you want to show up and closing the loops that quietly take up space in your mind and heart.
You don’t have to do this alone. We’re having these conversations across all of our coaching groups right now, and next week we’ll take it deeper in our community workshop, “How to Holiday with Presence.”
We’ll talk about setting boundaries, protecting your energy, and showing up to the season with intention—not overwhelm.
Because closing tabs isn’t just about productivity. It’s about creating room for presence.
And if you want support to do this work more deeply, we’d love to walk with you. Our 1-on-1 coaching is a powerful space to get clarity, close loops, and build momentum heading into the new year.
And in early 2026, both Emerge and LEAD, our women’s and men’s group coaching cohorts will launch again, specifically designed for leaders who want to grow in community and with accountability.
If you’ve been sitting on the edge of a decision—about what’s next for you, how you want to lead, or how you want to live—this is your nudge.
Finishing strong means being intentional about how you want to end this year. Decide how you want to show up. Decide what matters most. And let the rest go.
